Florence and the Machine “Lungs”

I love a strong female vocal, I really do, and the first time I heard Florence and the Machine I died. She’s got everything I couldn’t find in Jenny Lewis, She & Him, or (dear god) Bird and the Bee. She’s not cute, she’s not quirky, she’s not trying to be smarter than she is.

Florence and the Machine has some great singer-songwriter qualities without being too XPN/World Cafe/Indigo Girls (oh but you know I love Indigo Girls). It feels like rock with heavy Motown influences, but without sounding like it. The songs have a good sense of humor, but they also carry some serious baggage. I found myself relating to every track, whether she was singing about being in love or being heartbroken.

I’d call it Cat Power meets Neko Case, multiplied by Sleater-Kinney, divided by Regina Spektor.
